A field guide to legendary creatures from around the state of California

Merriam Webster defines a cryptid as “an animal (such as Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster) that has been claimed to exist but never proven to exist". Cryptozoology is “the study of and search for animals and especially legendary animals (such as Sasquatch) usually in order to evaluate the possibility of their existence.” (Merriam-Webster, 2014)  Bigfoot is (according to the ever trustworthy Wikipedia) an icon within the fringe pseudoscience of cryptozoology, and an enduring element of popular culture. As Bigfoot gets a lot of attention elsewhere, he will not be the focus of this site.
